R.T. Wolfe Donates Proceeds of Romantic Suspense, Flying in Shadows, to Operation Migration

om_logoI am dontating 10% of the May proceeds from my romantic suspense, Flying in Shadows, to Operation Migration. These guys are addciting. They raise highly endangered Whooping crane chicks (which grow to be 5 foot tall, by the way) and teach them to follow their glider plane from Wisconsin to Florida. Their travels are posted, photographed and videod. While you read a bit from Operation Migration’s own Heather Ray, I am off to go ‘purchase’ a mile of travel of for these dedicated scientists.

What is Operation Migration?

by Heather Ray, Director of Development, Niagara Falls, Operation Migration

Whooping Cr flt training 9-8-11Operation Migration is a non-profit organization, which developed a method utilizing ultralight aircraft to teach migration to captive-raised, precocial bird species such as Canada geese, Trumpeter swans, Sandhill cranes and most recently, endangered Whooping cranes. You may have seen their work in the 1995 Columbia Pictures film Fly Away Home.HPIM0440.JPG

In collaboration with the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership, Operation Migration has played a leading role in the reintroduction of endangered Whooping cranes into eastern North America since 2001.

IMG_6180It is believed that approximately 1,400 whooping cranes existed in 1860.

Their population declined due to hunting and habitat loss until 1941 when the last migrating flock dwindled to an all-time low of 15 birds. The wild, naturally occuring western flock has slowly increased to over 180. This flock winters in and around Aransas National Wildlife Refuge on the Gulf coast of Texas. In spring, they migrate north, nesting in Wood Buffalo National Park, which straddles the border of Alberta and Northwest Territories in Canada.127_2742_1

Scientists have long recognized the risk of having all of the wild whooping cranes using one wintering and breeding location. With all the wild birds concentrated in one small area, the population could be wiped out by disease, bad weather, or human impacts. Whooping crane survival depends on additional, separated populations.

To that end, in 2001 Operation Migration (OM) and the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership began using OM’s method to teach captive produced Whooping cranes and suitable migration path between Wisconsin and Florida. There are currently 108 cranes in this reintroduced flock and they continue to migrate – twice annually – between their summer home in Wisconsin and their Winter territories in southeastern U.S.

Dark Vengeance, Book 3 of the Best Selling Romantic Suspense Black Creek Series

Book 3 in the Black Creek Series, Dark Vengeance, is in its last of round of edits. The photo shoot for the cover and book trailer was last weekend. It was amazing. 297954_530096277042909_526998290_nSo far, my editors have said Dark Vengeance is the best of the series. Go figure. I’m writing this post because I promised to have this book out by April and it looks like it will be May. I’m so sorry. I know you would want a quality book rather than a fast one. The hits on the Dark Vengeance drop down tab are going crazy and I’ve signed up many new subscribers to my email. I am hugely appreciative of your support. Becoming a BestSeller was completely unexpected. You’re interest is truly what keeps me going.

I spent over three years of my life getting to know the characters in the Black Creek Series. When I sent the final manuscript to that first editor, I felt a bit lost. I’m not ready to let go of these characters. I have outlined at least five books featuring Nickie Savage, the main character in Dark Vengeance. Just last week I finished a novella linking the two series together. The Nickie Savage Series will be heavier on the mystery and suspense than on the romance of the Black Creek Series but will carry the heavy passion between Duncan and Nickie. They have much to unravel, discover and fight for. I can’t wait to dive into it!

I have also been outlining a Sea Scape Series. This is so dang fun. Can I just move to Alaska and write on a mountain for six months straight? There are so many books buzzing holes in my head, dying to get out. Oh right. I have a job and need to pay my bills. Boo. You can catch a glimpse of all of my books … published, soon to be published and works in progress. They each have their own drop down tab under the Books link on my Home page. Better yet, sign up for my monthly newsletter and I will email you any news or progress. The link is on the right hand side of my Home page.

Please keep writing reviews and telling your friends about the Black Creek Series. Who knows? Maybe someday soon I can pay my bills from my book sales and get the Nickie Savage and Sea Scape books out all the faster. Enjoy your Spring!

Author R.T. Wolfe Trip to Liberia

It’s been almost 2 years since I took a trip to the war-torn, African country of Liberia. This is the first time I’ve written about it.

Many of us don’t remember, but this is the spot the American government chose to send the nearly 15,000 freed slaves between the early 1800s and the Civil War. Thus, the people of Liberia speak English and are largely devout Methodist Christians. Liberia was the first independent democratic republic in African history.

However, the latter 1900s found Liberia in a state of their own civil war. The war lasted 13 years, ending in 2003. When I arrived in 2011, the evidence of war still splattered the landscape. Many roads were barely passable due to grenade and rifle destruction. It was a war tactic used much like that of blowing up a bridge. I saw pictures in the capital city’s museum depicting roads during the war. Rifle casings carpeted the concrete as far as the eye could see. Many buildings remain vacant with large holes in the sides due to bombings and shootings. Guns are now illegal in Liberia, but I saw a few down town in the capital of Monrovia.

SIU, Aug, 2011 055The unemployment rate in Liberia is 88%. The people use the bush (jungle) to extract materials needed to survive. They are a hard-working, creative people. March, 2013 018Here is picture of a tiny sculpture created from a scavenged rifle shell casing. Liberia is one of the few places to find ebony trees. As their name suggests, the color of the wood is black. These trees are highly protected in Liberia. The country has a generous cycle of cultivation and replanting of the trees. The people use the wood to carve sculptures such as this hippo to sell in street-side stands and markets.100_2192

The stories from the locals were horrific and yet the common themes in this country are both one of intense appreciation to the missionaries of all colors and to the blessings they feel shower them each day. Family structures were completely turned upside down during the 13 years of war. Blood bonds are not as relevant as many families were separated in their escape from gun fire and imprisonment. Women took orphans under their wings as they ran from battle grounds adding new life-long ‘children’ to their family trees. Education was also disrupted. Due to the longevity of the war, it was not uncommon to find adults in grade school. I donated $120 to pay for a year of elementary school to a 30 year old woman. She wept with thanksgiving.

I went to Liberia because I agree with the Chinese proverb that reads, ‘Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed for a lifetime.’ The group I was with taught the people of Liberia how to cultivate rice. Hundreds of rubber trees were donated. Firestone has a large plant in Liberia. The missionaries taught the Liberians how to raise thousands of chickens at a time rather than the few every family seemed to own. SIU, Aug, 2011 086Educators in the group presented teaching conferences and donated materials for the elementary schools in both urban and remote towns.

Many of the R.T. Wolfe books incorporate some kind of conservation or giving. You will find drop down tabs for a number of non-profit groups. Without needing a spoiler alert, I will share that a portion of Flying in Shadows, Book 2 in the romantic suspense Black Creek Series, mentions the idea of donating trees to third world countries. Treecycle is an organization that will donate to most third world countries and to fire destroyed areas in America. At the posting of this blog, the cost was $1 for each tree. Click HERE to get to the link. You will find easy directions explaining how to donate directly to Liberia.

I look forward to going back someday. The people are truly magical.SIU, Aug, 2011 059

Romantic Suspense author R.T. Wolfe Teams Up with the Center for Conservation Biology

RT Wolfe - Black Creek Series - Flying in Shadows - Book 2 - Cover1 (2)Flying in Shadows is book 2 in the Black Creek Series. I am humbled and overwhelmed the sales and interest thus far. A friends-turn-lovers story, the novel is about a conservation biologist and a land developer who have been best friends and clashed heads since they were kids. Now, with mounting danger on their heels they have to find common ground to stay together and stay alive.

Much of the inspiration regarding the scenes involving eagles came from the Center for Conservation Biology (CCB) and their work with the eagles along the East coast. Biologist, Libby Mojica, was kind enough to read an Advance Reading Copo of Flying in Shadows for authenticity regarding the facts I used. I have to say I was scared to death. Luckily, with a few corrections I was given not only a stamp of approval but lovely words of praise about this romantic suspense. Ms. Mojica explained that she, “…read the book within days of receiving it. It was excellent. Suspenseful, romantic…” I’m truly honored.

I am beginning to get into the habit of promoting non-profit organizations and am finding much gratification from it. For the month of March, I am donating 10% of the Flying in Shadows proceeds to CCB.

Here are a few words from Ms. Mojica about their amazing organization:

The mission of The Center for Conservation Biology, through all of its diverse programs, is to provide the global community with the information needed to drive thoughtful, science-based conservation, to educate and train the next generation of conservation scientists, and to make lasting contributions to the natural world through critical thinking, innovation, and ground-breaking research.

CCB works with a diverse mix of avian species including raptors, shorebirds, waterbirds, songbirds, waterfowl, and seabirds. Since the 1960’s, researchers at CCB have worked to conserve Bald Eagles and monitor the species comeback after the era of DDT. In 2007, CCB received the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s Recovery Champion Award in recognition of their contribution to the recovery of the species in the Chesapeake Bay region.

CCB continues to monitor the health of Bald Eagle populations in the Chesapeake Bay with annual nest surveys, banding activities, and GPS-satellite tracking. To learn more about CCB, please visit their website www.ccbbirds.org

Thank you Libby and CCB for your continued work. And readers, take advantage of this opportunity to enjoy a piece of the Black Creek Series. The book is just #3.99 and your money will go a great cause.

What’s New with R.T.?

What’s new? I’m not sure where to begin, but I want to thank everyone who’s been asking! I’ve been a closet-author for so long, public inquiries are tricky for me.

Regarding my work, my debut romantic suspense, Black Creek Burning, is out and working its way on the charts.

After witnessing the murder of her parents, an aloof teacher and landscape designer finds more than she bargains for in her new neighbor, a clever wood working artist who’s determined to win her over and find the killer.

This getting started in the publishing world thing is nuts. What a ride! I’ve made it into the top 5 out of 700 Goodreads New Authors to Read, had the honor of serving as a guest on USA  Today’s Happy Ever After blog and am starting a review blog tour next week. The Black Creek Burning book trailer is nearing 1,000 hits, I sold over 150 books at my first signing, and I have a signed print book giveaway going on through Goodreads until December 31st. How did this happen? I’m incredibly humbled.

_MG_3119 (2)Book two in the Black Creek Trilogy, To Fly in Shadows, is tentatively to be released on February 1st.

Can a lifelong need for one another be enough to allow a conservation biologist and a building developer to find compromise as their different beliefs and her violent past work to rip them apart?

_MG_3165 (2)This novel is ready to be sent to the formatters and book cover artist. _MG_3154 (2)The book trailer photo shoot was amazing. The superintendent at our local zoo allowed my model in the eagle and hawk exhibits and to hold an amazingly beautiful barn owl on her arm. How perfect for the main character’s role of conservation biologist.

Currently, I am working on book three and still have a tentative release of July 1st for Dark Vengeance.

A Hollywood artist spends much of his life reliving the night his beloved aunt was nearly murdered. The night he was used as bait. Now the assailant is free and a whole new line of twists begin…twists that include a brilliant and confusing detective.

On a more personal note, I’m learning how to juggle writing and publishing. For years it was just writing. The addition of publishing is quite a ride. Blog tours, social networking, supporting fellow authors…the list truly goes on. Oh yes, I have a family! LOL I’m traveling all over the Midwest watching my three sons compete at their swim meets. (always with my laptop on board) Recently, we took a ski trip to Colorado. A dislocated rib, influenza and bronchitis couldn’t keep the Wolfe’s boys down! We had a blast.

I can’t thank you enough for your constant support. I appreciate the reviews, the times you share about my trilogy and for reading my novels!

Gratefully,

R.T. Wolfe
